Special Event Descriptions – 99th CWL NATIONAL CONVENTION

You are invited to come and experience Calgary’s Western Hospitality first hand this summer and be “Branded in Christ”! The Hyatt Regency Hotel, in the heart of Calgary, will be home to our convention. Here is a sneak peak of the events we have for you:


SATURDAY, August 17th: Calgary City Tour

3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Get to know our city with a 3-hour, City of Calgary Tour.   Board a climate-controlled coach bus at the Hyatt at 3:00pm.  First stop will be the historic Fort Calgary, then the Stampede Grounds, home of the world-renowned Calgary Stampede – The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.  Next stop is St. Mary’s University, home of the CWL Chair for Catholic Studies and The St. John’s Bible, then on to Canada Olympic Park where we find the Sports Hall of Fame, an informative and interactive masterpiece of sports memorabilia.  Buses will return to the Hyatt by 6:00 pm.

SUNDAY, August 18th:

The day begins with a choice of two tours in the morning. 

9:30 am – Pancake Breakfast & Tour of Heritage Park

Experience a traditional Calgary Stampede style Pancake Breakfast at Heritage Park. Your ticket includes a 1-hour guided walking tour through Heritage Parks exhibits showcasing Western Canadian history from the 1860’s to the 1950’s. You will have the opportunity to visit Gasoline Alley, ride on the Sternwheeler across the Glenmore Reservoir, tour the Famous Five House plus several other restored buildings of the early 1900's, ride the original Canada Pacific train, visit the First Nations encampment, shop at the stores on Main Street, visit the Wainwright Hotel, and take in the Amusement Park.  Buses will return to the Hyatt by 1:30 pm.

Cost $40.00




10:00 am – Private Tour of the National Music Centre

Take in a walking tour of the famous Studio Bell at the National Music Centre in downtown Calgary. This is a spectacular new addition to the Downtown Calgary Core. There are interactive displays of music memorabilia from every genre of music and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. You may discover a hidden musical talent within you!  The tour begins with a short ride on the Calgary Light Rail Transit (LRT), then a short walk to the Centre.  Tour guides will be available to assist you.    Return to the Hyatt by 1:30pm.

Cost:  $25.00


Opening Eucharistic Celebration

Our opening Eucharistic celebration will begin on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at 7:00 pm at St. Albert the Great Church.  St. Albert the Great was consecrated on January 5th, 2003 and is located in South East Calgary.

Transportation to the church takes 30 – 35 minutes and it is not within walking distance.  Delegates will start boarding the climate-controlled coach buses at the Hyatt at 5:00 pm.

After the Opening Ceremonies, the Knights of Columbus will host a Wine and Cheese Reception in the Church hall. Buses will then transport everyone back to the Hyatt.

Cost for bus:  $12.00 round trip


MONDAY, August 19th: “Western Shindig”

Come experience an interactive evening of western food, fun, music and dance at the Hyatt. Pack your cowboy hat, western outfit and boots for this evening. We have invited some special guests and will make sure you get to kick up your heels! 

Cost: $65

WEDNESDAY, August 21st: Closing Eucharistic Celebration

The Closing Eucharistic celebration will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 5:00pm. The Cathedral’s full name is The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and was consecrated on December 11, 1957.

Buses will transport us from the Hyatt to St. Mary’s Cathedral (ticket required, but for those who wish to walk, the Cathedral is eight blocks away. 

Cost for bus:  $8.00


Gala Banquet

After the Eucharistic celebration, delegates will return to the Hyatt and are invited to enjoy a special evening of Alberta beef, fun and entertainment at our Gala Banquet where we will celebrate being “Branded in Christ”. Cost $85.00


THURSDAY, August 22nd:

7:30 am-3:30 pm - Badlands Tour to Drumheller

Venture East to the Badlands of Alberta, and Tour Drumheller. Climate-controlled coach buses will leave the Hyatt at 7:30 am and on the way to Drumheller will stop so you can enjoy the impressive view of Horseshoe Canyon. Other sights include the Hoodoos, the Rosedale Suspension Bridge and Drumheller’s Little Church.  Lunch is included in your ticket price and will be at the Canadian Badlands Passion Play site.  This play has told the story of the Life of Christ in a stunning natural amphitheater for the past 25 years.  After lunch, you can shop in the Passion Play Gift shop and enjoy a unique, behind-the-scenes site tour. Experience how the actors make their way through hidden tunnels, see the wardrobe and armory of over 500 costumes while you learn the history of the play. A truly memorable trip to enjoy.  Buses will return to the Hyatt by 3:30 pm. Cost $100.00


7:30 am- 6:30 pm - Tour to Banff National Park and Lake Louise

Venture West to Banff National Park and Lake Louise. Climate-controlled coach buses will leave the Hyatt at 7:30 am. In Canada’s first national park, you will enjoy the amazing views of nature the entire trip, from the intense emerald green hues of the water of Lake Louise to Moraine Lake in the majestic Valley of the 10 Peaks. Then on to the town of Banff where you will have free time for shopping and lunch (not included in the ticket price). The streets of Banff are lined with shops, restaurants, art galleries and museums.  Remember to bring along your camera as the scenery is breathtaking at that time of year.  Before heading back to Calgary, you will enjoy a bus tour of the city of Banff with stops at several scenic locations. Buses will return to the Hyatt by 6:30 pm.  Cost:  $75.00
