Encountering Seekers
Rev. Tim Boyle

..young adults who are genuinely good people but are not attracted to our church
..stumbling blocks..
..Immutable .. unchangeable… Image of God.
.. Gospel is a text to be studied

Created Catholicism..  a bundled community.. one source of grace..
A Fortress mentality suspicious of the world

Sadly this also led to clericalism..
8 of 10 Canadians is an ex Catholic..
The story of two disciples on road to Emmaus

Chief Division not believers versus non-believers but settlers versus seekers.
Settlers worry essentials whittled away ….
Seekers regard faith as a journey involves crises uncertainties

Used to be two models of pastoral life.. one was to support people in the pew.. and the other missionary efforts to those outside.
We now we need a third..how to accompany those who are like the younger brother in the prodigal son story .. who have left the household.. are living in the world but are part of our family..

Departure ..moving on..crossing borders. Is part of our tradition.

  1. Seekers want to figure things out for themselves.. God who does not offer guarantees but possibility.  A different reading of the burning bush.. I will be who I will be..
  2. Second of these might be to look toward their openness .. to newcomers. The hospitality of Abraham is the first prophet of strangeness.  The Annunciation of Mary follows a similar pattern
  3. Why did God create the universe ..
Ark of the story..I will dwell among Israelites. God has come to dwell with the people John’s gospel last words Jesus says before arrested father may we come and make their home with them

So bridges..

  1. Seekers will be more drawn to a God of possibilities..
  2. Meeting the stranger and choosing hospitality
  3. Homecoming ..heaven on earth

Guest Speaker – Dr. Peter Baltutis spoke on the "Church as a Potluck Dinner: New Models of Being a Church of Encounter and Witness." Church is the people of God. Our churches must become communities where everyone is encouraged to share their gifts with each other.

  • What does my community do well? How can I support these ministries?
  • What does my community NOT do well (gaps in ministry)? Rather than criticizing, how can I be part of the solution?
  • Ask not what your church can do for you; ask what you can do for your church.
  • Unity does not mean uniformity. Not everything is for you (and that's okay). Do we allow space for everyone to contribute equally to our community? Are we creating space for the seekers?
  • Face-to-face conversations prevent polarization.

The Friday "Community Collection" raised $2,041 for the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society. Donations support immigrants and refugees with services from basic needs to housing, language, education, employment training, and more.
