Petition on the “Right to Life” in International Law
The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is one of two implementing treaties of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Covenant explicitly notes the right-to-life of all human beings, but maybe not much longer. In July 2017, during its 120th session, the Human Rights Committee finalised its first reading of draft General Comment on article 6 of the Covenant. Paragraph 9 of the Draft General Comment deals with terminations of pregnancy; Paragraph 10 deals with individuals planning or attempting to commit suicide. To read the draft, go to the bottom of the center section and select for English, French or Spanish (or click on that choice below):
Several groups are working together to present a united front that the unborn child has a place in international law, just like every other human being. They have launched a petition that will be presented on October 6th at UN headquarters, and are asking that people from all over the globe and all walks of life sign this petition so that their voices can be heard. Go to https://c-fam.org/right-life-international/ for more information and to sign the petition.
