2022 Letter to the Prime Minister

Right Hon. Justin Trudeau,
Prime Minister of Canada
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

Re: Resolution 2022.01 Enact Federal Legislation to Reduce Food Loss and Waste

As one of over 63,000 members of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada, I am writing to convey my support of the above resolution adopted at the 2022 National Convention in Kelowna, British Columbia in August 2022.

Reducing food loss and waste in the agri-food industry including the industrial, commercial, and institutional sectors is a critical goal to safeguard Canada’s food security and sustainability. Food loss and waste occurs because there is a lack of: government legislation; business infrastructure to address food loss and waste; and cooperation and collaboration between different sectors of the agri-food industry. National legislation is needed to address these causes.

Also reducing food loss and waste will benefit Canadians by reducing costs to consumers, driving change and efficiency and competitiveness within the agri-food industry, and protecting the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and climate effects.

What action will you take to enact legislation to reduce food loss and waste in Canada?

I look forward to hearing your position and proposed action on this issue. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Dear Danielle Smith,

I urge your government to collaborate with the federal government to reduce food loss and waste in Canada. By working together at various levels of government collective action can be taken on this challenge.

What action will your government take to help reduce food loss and waste in Canada?

I look forward to hearing your position and proposed action on this issue. Thank you.
