Over 18 is a clear-eyed examination of modern pornography and its effects on kids, teens, parents, and porn stars. In addition to interviews with porn producers, ex-porn stars, and academics, directors Jared and Michelle Brock highlight the story of Joseph, a 13-year-old boy who is recovering from a porn addiction that he fell into when he was nine years old. The film compares what porn used to be in the magazine era and what it’s become in the age of the internet, and demonstrates why kids, in particular, are susceptible to addiction.

THE STATS

• 9 in 10 boys and 6 in 10 girls are exposed to pornography before the age of 18 ^[1]
• Of the youth that have seen pornography online, 94% had seen it by age 14 ^[2]
• 40% of teens have created a sexual image or video of themselves, and a quarter have sent this to someone else ^[3]
• 53% of boys and 39% of girls who have seen porn believe it’s a realistic depiction of sex ^[2]
• 44% of boys and 29% of girls who have seen online pornography say it’s given them ideas about the types of sex they want to try out ^[2]
• Of minors who have seen online pornography, about 60% saw it for the first time at home ^[2]
• 39% of boys and 23% of girls have seen sexual bondage online ^[1]
